Defining Energy in Nineteenth-Century Native American Literature

Abstract Native American authors in the first half of nineteenth century—the dawn Anthropocene some accounts—were witness to rapid expansion settler-colonialism powered by new ideologies energy and fueled fossil capitalism. These authors, though, resisted extractive metaphors for fuel, offering more organic intimate visions instead. Using humanities theories developed Warren Cariou (Métis) Bob Johnson, among others, this article will analyze Mary Jemison’s (Seneca) autobiography; Jane Johnston Schoolcraft’s (Ojibwe) poem, “On Doric Rock, Lake Superior”; John Rollin Ridge’s (Cherokee) novel, The Life Adventures Joaquín Murieta. works show how defined as cyclical contrast growing settler society’s vision linear, unending extraction. This argues that nineteenth-century Anglophone literatures expand scope describing intimacy while also extending histories Indigenous resistance imaginaries.
